Skagway, Alaska

Port Information

Skagway, Alaska is home to 800 residents, less than one-third of the guest capacity of the Disney Wonder. However they embrace the cruise guests who visit their town each summer. Known as the Gateway to the Klondike – Skagway rose to prominence in the gold rush of the 1890s. By the end of the decade, prospecting had come to an end, but the little town remained.

Top Port Adventures

Glacier Lake Kayak and Great Rail Adventure: Glacier Lake is a sight to behold. On this active adventure you and a partner will be able to kayak this picturesque lake. You will also get to ride the fantastic White Pass Rail through some of the most beautiful land you will ever experience. The entire time I was on the train I kept saying to myself, “This is why we came to Alaska.”

DCL Prep School Tip: The Kayak adventure is listed as ages 9 & up. I strongly recommend families not take children under the age of 13. We happened to arrive on a blustery day, making navigation nearly impossible for less experienced adults, never mind smaller children. The guides were fantastic and were always at our sides. Kayaks are doubles, meaning if your group has an odd number, you could get paired with a stranger (of unknown abilities) in your kayak. A passport is REQUIRED for this Port Adventure.

If a relaxing train ride is more your style, book the White Pass Scenic Railway Port Adventure. No passport needed. The train ride is open to guests of all ages.

sw57-ghosts-goodtime-girls-walking-tour-g03Ghosts and Goodtime Girl Walking Tour: OK, so this one is a bit on the cheesy side, but my family loves ghost tours. The dramatic and entertaining guides tell fantastic stories which go beyond the history lessons a standard tour guide would tell. This particular tour is led by a “madam of the Red Onion Saloon” and will take you through the back alleys and the old red-light district of Skagway – thus, this tour is only for ages 18 and up.

sw36-liarsville-gold-rush-trail-camp-salmon-bake-featuring-exclusive-disney-character-experience-g03Liarsville Gold Rush Trail Camp and Salmon Bake with Exclusive Disney Character Experience: This Port Adventure is one of the most family friendly experiences on the Skagway roster. If your little ones prefer running around, panning for gold and going on scavenger hunts, this is the Port Adventure you want. Your family will be entertained during this interactive quest for gold, and you will get to enjoy a campfire with some Disney pals. This is followed by an all-you-can eat salmon feast. All ages.
